This September, the Collierville Burch Library is joining with the American Library Association and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-up Month, an initiative to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all – a free library card.
Libraries build a foundation for children’s future success starting from the earliest stages of development. Librarians play a key role in helping children develop the basic tools for school readiness by teaching families the components of early literacy. Library programs can help make stories come alive through storytelling, puppet shows, plays and music.
Did you know that reading is brain food? Research shows reading aids brain development, especially in a child’s first five years. Reading provides the foundation for language and literacy skills. And most important, when you take the time to read to your children, you are telling them “you are special to me.” Spending time with your child in the library is the perfect place to expose your young child to the great big world of reading.
Older students can also find tools for success at the local library. They can Access high-speed internet and digital tools, as well as work with trained professionals on how to best use these resources. While the library still offers quiet places for study, it also offers a multitude of programs designed to broaden your child’s taste in literature, expanding their minds and vocabulary. And materials aren’t just limited to physical books – online resources, such as E-books and E-audiobooks, and STEM kits for all ages are available to meet the needs and interests of our young patrons.
Last, but not least, owning a library card will teach your child responsibility. A library card may be the first “official” card a child receives, and with that card comes responsibilities. As card carrying patrons, children will learn about treating things that belong to others with care and how to be a good “borrower.” They will learn to become responsible members of our community.
So go ahead and put ‘library card’ on your school supply list. The Library has something for everyone. Learn how to get a Collierville Library card here.
