What is the Downtown Collierville Small Area Plan? This is the working name for a study launched in September of 2009, initiated by the Town of Collierville, and the focus is on Collierville's historic square and its surrounding neighborhoods with the goal of creating a shared, and formally adopted, vision for its future. To develop this vision, the Town held a community visioning exercise in the fall of 2009 to gain ideas from the public on the future of downtown. Also studied by the Town were many of the previous studies of downtown done over the last decade. By November 2009, the steering committee was formed with the task of developing and refining a vision and plan for downtown. The steering committee, which began meeting in December, had a week-long brainstorming session January 12th through 14th called "Design Workshop Week" to review in depth maps, sketches, example photos, and draft policies to create the plan. By the end of that week, a vision had emerged: "the Square & Downtown Area should be both a destination and the heard of a vibrant and living neighborhood." What does this vision mean for that plan being drafted? A Destination: This is part of the vision that recognizes that our Historic Square and its historical significance is already a draw locally and regionally. The plan will address ways to help people find downtown through improved directional signage and better road connections to the remainder of Town. It will also identify reasons for coming to downtown, such as the new White Church Museum of Collierville History. Heart of a vibrant and living neighborhood: With many active and successful businesses like the 130-year-old McGinnis Hardware and Cafe Piazza, and many homes in the area, Collierville's downtown is already a vibrant neighborhood. By adding new residents and retail activity to the south side of the railroad tracks and downtown Washington Street, the plan will seek to ensure that downtown Collierville will continue to be a living neighborhood for generations to come. A major goal of the plan is also to connect the Square and Suggs and Tom Brooks Parks to the Town's existing greenbelt system and to other parks. Another major goal is to improve road access within the study, and to better connect Downtown Collierville to other areas of Town.
