Purpose and Intent of the Town's

Collierville’s Historic Preservation Program promotes the identification, education, rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, and restoration of the Town's historic, architectural, and archeological heritage.

The Historic District Commission (HDC) is a local governmental body charged with leading historic preservation activities within the community via the H-1 local zoning overlay and the Historic District Guidelines. The HDC was organized in 1989 to preserve Collierville’s historic and/or architectural value, aesthetic atmosphere, and to strengthen the economy, promote cultural welfare, improve property values, promote rehabilitation, protect and enhance the Town’s attractions, and promote education. The HDC’s primary preservation tool is issuing a Certificate of Appropriateness for most exterior changes to private property (about 300 properties) within the H-1 Overlay.

This website features the following resource library and links based upon sound preservation and rehabilitation practices.

In addition to the HDC, the Heritage Commission, Main Street Collierville, and the Collierville Morton Museum of History also have roles in the preservation of Collierville’s history.

  • Heritage Commission: Its mission is to preserve, interpret and impart knowledge of the history of the Town of Collierville and foster appreciation of its historic significance. Established in 2009, as the authority regarding Town history, they research, collect information, stories, and documents of the history of the Town.
  • Main Street Collierville: A non-profit, tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization started in 1991“to improve the quality of life by strengthening the historic district as the center of the community through organization, promotion, design, and economic restructuring with historic preservation ethics.” Main Street Collierville is known for its award-winning events, special preservation projects, and its ability to bring together the community related to downtown and preservation issues.
  • Collierville History Museum: The Morton Museum, which opened in 2012 in Collierville's Downtown Historic District, has free admission and explores Collierville's past through exhibitions, a community art gallery, and reading room.
