2017 HOLIDAY SANITATION COLLECTION SCHEDULE
MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY
Collierville Public Services will be closed Monday, January 16th in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The Sanitation collection schedule for the week will be as follows:
Garbage, Recyclables, and Commercial will be picked up the day after your regular collection day. There will be no appliance pick up on Thursday, January 19th. The next available appliance pick up will be Thursday, January 26th.
Sanitation crews will be working President’s Day, Monday, February 20th. Collection for the week will be as regularly scheduled.
Collierville Public Services will be closed Friday, April 15th in observance of Good Friday. The Sanitation collection schedule for the week will be as follows:
Garbage and recyclables and Commercial pick up will run as regularly scheduled.

INDEPENDENCE DAY – JULY 4TH
Collierville Public Services will be closed Tuesday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day. The Sanitation collection schedule for the week will be as follows:
Monday's Garbage, Recyclables, and Commercial routes will be picked up on your regular collection day. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays routes will be picked up the day after your regular collection day. There will be no appliance pick up on Thursday, July 6th. The next available appliance pick up will be Thursday, July 13th.
Collierville Public Services will be closed Monday, September 4th in observance of Labor Day. The Sanitation collection schedule for the week will be as follows:
Garbage, Recyclables, and Commercial routes will be picked up the day after your regular collection day. There will be no appliance pick up on Thursday, September 7th. The next available appliance pick up will be Thursday, September 14th.

Collierville Public Services will be closed on Veteran’s Day, Saturday, November 11th. Collection for the week will be as regularly scheduled.
Public Services will be closed Thursday, November 23rd and Friday, November 24th in observance of Thanksgiving. However, the Sanitation Division will be working on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23rd. The Sanitation collection schedule for the week will be as follows:

CHRISTMAS EVE (2017)
Collierville Public Services will be closed Friday, December 22nd and Monday, December 25th in observance of the Christmas Holiday. The Sanitation collection schedule for the week will be as follows:

NEW YEAR (2018)

Help the Environment this Spring by properly placing yard waste at the curb for collection
Sharps include needles, syringes and lancets. Used sharps have the potential to harm anyone that comes in contact with them. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently issued new recommendations for disposal of sharps at home:
This is a service you purchase. Included in your service will be a needle container and mail-back packaging. You simply fill the container with your used needles and mail it back using the package provided for you. The price for this service varies on the size of needle container you choose. To locate a provider, you can call the Coalition for Safe Community Needle Disposal at 1-800-643-1643 or visit their website at www.safeneedledisposal.org Be sure to ask the company if their service is approved by the U.S. Postal Service.
Home Needle Destruction Devices:
These destruction devices allow you to destroy needles at home by burning, melting, cutting off the needle— making it safe to throw in the garbage. Prices for devices vary by manufacturer. For more information visit www.fda.gov.
If the above options are not feasible, you may follow these instructions for disposal:
Place sharps in a hard plastic or metal container, with a screw-on or tightly secured lid. Thick plastic bottles such as detergent bottles or bleach bottles work well. Do not fill the container more than ¾ full to avoid getting a needle stick. Before discarding the container, reinforce the lid with heavy duty tape. Do not put sharps in a glass container, or any container that you plan to recycle. Keep all containers with sharps out of the reach of children or pets until you dispose of it in your regular trash.
Proper Paint Disposal
- Reuse leftover paint for touch-ups or donate it to a community organization.
- For water-based paint, remove the lid and allow the paint to dry. Absorbent material (kitty litter, oil dry, ect.) can be added to the paint to speed up the drying process. Once the paint is dry, it can be placed in your green garbage cart.
- * Oil-based paint must be disposed at the Memphis/Shelby County Household Hazardous Waste Disposal facility.
10 Tips for controlling pests & reducing odors in and around Household Garbage carts
1. Always keep the lid of your cart closed2. Keep your household trash in sealed plastic garbage bags3. Never put food waste directly into your cart4. Periodically wash out your cart using water and a mild detergent5. Keep your cart properly maintained (ensure your cart is free of holes that would give pests access to your garbage)6. Leave food scraps in your refrigerator or freezer until the night before collection.7. Store your cart in a cool dry place when possible and keep it out of sunlight8. Sprinkle baking soda in your cart to reduce odors9. If pests like raccoons, possum, cats, or dogs are getting into your garbage cart sprinkle ammonia or moth balls inside the cart and it will act as a deterrent to the animal.10. Commercial pest sprays can also be applied to the carts contents to deter pests (follow manufacturers instructions and ensure the spray will not adversely react with or damage the cart).

BENEFITS OF GRASSCYCLING
Grass-cycling is the natural and easy process of leaving grass clippings on the lawn when mowing.
Recycling grass clippings is simple, effective and saves time, work, money and it helps conserve landfill capacity.
Grass-cycling is not new. Many parks and golf courses have been practicing grasscycling successfully for years.
The end result is a greener, healthier lawn.
GRASSCYCLING DOES NOT CAUSE THATCH BUILD-UP
An 11-year study at the USDA research station in Beltsville MD showed that thatch is mainly composed of grass roots, not clippings. Clippings left on the lawn decay quickly and release nutrients back to the established grass.
GRASSCYCLING DOES NOT SPREAD LAWN DISEASE
Watering, fertilization, and sharpness of the mower blade have a greater influence on the occurrence of lawn disease than grass-cycling.
DON’T BAG CLIPPINGS NURTURE THE LAWN

· Clipping nutrients encourage a healthier lawn
· Less mowing, hauling.
· Established lawns need irrigation to supplement natural rainfall yet may require more water in hot weather, even in dry cool periods.
· In hot dry weather, lawns may need as much as 1” of water every 5 to 7 days or up to 3-hours with the typical sprinkler.
· Try to water in early morning. Watering in evenings may encourage disease.
· Portable sprinklers offer reasonable prices for watering, distribution and range methods. Select a sprinkler based on the size and shape of your lawn.
· Stationary sprinklers are good for small patches that need extra water.
· Rotary and impact sprinklers are for circular watering on lawns that are medium to large.
· Oscillating sprinklers send a fan of water over a large rectangular area. Revolving sprinklers work in smaller areas, shooting a circular pattern of jets of water.
· A time-controlled irrigation system can maximize efficiency with an automatic lawn watering schedule.
Lawns need properly timed fertilizer applications to become dense and green. Over fertilization weakens your lawn and causes excess top growth. Grass-cycling, in conjunction with proper fertilization, enhances the health of your lawn. Grass-cycling greatly reduces the need for fertilizer because grass clippings return nitrogen to the soil.
· Grass-cycling, reduces costs and improves the environment because it reduces the number of grass bags taken to the landfill.
· The Town collects an average of 6,300 tons of bagged grass or approximately 77,300 bags each year. All bagged grass collected is taken to a landfill for disposal.
· Collection of bagged grass costs the Town $275,000 per year for collection and disposal.
GRASSCYCLING MOWING TIPS
· Cut when the grass is dry. Keep your mower sharp.
· Set your mower to cut at the proper height.
· Mow often. Try not to remove more than one-third of the lawn height each cut.. Frequent moving may be needed at times.
· Proper mowing is essential to grass-cycling and can increase lawn quality by 30% or more.
· All mowers can grass-cycle. Simply remove your mower’s collection bag.
· Many manufacturers have attachment or special designs that improve a mower’s grass-cycling performance.
· Frequent mowing at a low cutting height deprives the root system of nutrients and moisture. Longer grass blades create more shade, providing the soil protection from the sun.

A: The Memphis and Shelby County Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
A: Shelby County. Since the facility is for all residents of Shelby County, Memphis and Shelby County agreed the facility should be built and operated by Shelby County. Therefore, Memphis subcontracted with Shelby County (as it relates to the use of TDEC grant funds) to build and operate the facility.

A: For budgetary reasons, the facility will initially be open two days per week (Tuesdays and Saturdays). Due to the high costs of operations involving this form of waste, we must proceed cautiously as management gains a better feel for operational needs and costs. On days other than Tuesday and Saturday, management and staff will be concentrating on material preparation, shipping and other business, in order to make room for incoming materials.
A: Operationally, the staff will be on site 8:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m.; which is an eight hour work day. However, ample time will be needed before and after collections and time will be needed to prepare materials before the end of the work day. Therefore, in order to properly manage the material, collection hours must be limited to 8:30 am. to 1:00 p.m.
A: Free to Shelby County residents.
A: Household hazardous waste refers to material generated in a residential home which are toxic, ignitable, corrosive or reactive and may be a danger to residents and the environment if not properly disposed.

A: To prevent hazardous material from contaminating the environment, reduce the risk to consumers and to promote proper waste management.
A: The facility is technically a “drop-off” facility, where residents can bring hazardous material. There will be no processing or disposal of hazardous materials on site, only packaging and shipping. Also, the facility does not operate vehicles to collect from resident’s homes.
A: Yes, 15 gallons or 100 lbs. per vehicle, per month.
A: The residential waste stream is extremely complex and it is very expensive to collect, sort, package and dispose of the multitude of hazardous materials generated in homes; therefore, there must be ample funding in place to build and operate the appropriate collection facility. It has taken many years of discussions and negotiations to find the proper site and funding to open this facility.
A: The answer to this question is unknown. Enough funds have been appropriated to build a facility and begin collections on a limited scale; however, the volume and cost for collecting and processing will ultimately determine what funding is necessary.
A: Unlike non-hazardous waste, each hazardous material requires special handling, packaging and disposal, which is much higher than the cost of disposal at local landfills. Example: One ton of hazardous material may cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to dispose versus $20 -$30 per ton for regular waste in a local landfill.
A: Yes. Each municipality in Shelby County has committed to contribute funds annually based on the population of their city. Also, each municipality is responsible for answering questions, promotion, education and the dissemination of information to residents of their respective communities.
A: Only residents of Shelby County are eligible to bring material to the facility. No commercial waste, commercial vehicles or vehicles from other counties or states will be allowed on site. Vehicles with out-of-county tags will be turned away.
A: This facility was built to provide an outlet for residentially generated or household hazardous waste and the State of Tennessee grant which helps fund the facility stipulates no commercial waste. Commercial generators must contract with hazardous waste companies directly.
A: Yes, residents may be asked to provide identification by facility management.

A: The line will end at 1:00 p.m. at a place to be determined by management on the drive leading to the facility, off Haley Road. Vehicles behind the designated ending point in line; will be instructed to return another day.
A: The facility’s staff cannot collect and prepare materials at the same time; therefore, ample time is needed each work day in order to gather all the materials collected that day and to prepare them for storage until the next work day. Since several hours are needed, a cut-off point in the line is necessary. We respectfully ask everyone’s patience and understanding as it relates to closing time.
- Again, there will be no processing or disposal of hazardous waste at the facility.
- Materials will be sorted, packaged and shipped to various recycling and disposal facilities.
- Professional contractors specializing in hazardous and non hazardous waste management will process the materials.
- Every effort will be made to recycle materials to avoid disposal and local outlets for materials may be utilized.
A: The facility is not prepared to field calls, as the staff will be busy addressing hazardous materials. Note: Shelby County is the operator of the facility and will determine contact with the facility.
A: Due to the nature of this operation, tours and walk up visits will not be allowed.

- The drive leading to the fenced facility is located on the south side of Haley Road, just past the stop sign at Haley and Nixon Rd. (the Shelby Co. Correction Facility is across the road from the entrance)
- Vehicles will proceed on a paved drive approximately 75 yards from Haley Road to the gates of the facility.
- The road will be marked with arrows for residents to follow.
- Vehicles will proceed in line until told to stop.
- Residents are to remain in their vehicle, unless otherwise instructed.
- Facility staff will remove the material from vehicles.
- Upon unloading, vehicles will proceed slowly, following the marked drive, which circles the building and brings the vehicles back through the gates, to Haley Rd.
A: Anyone intentionally not following facility instructions, will be told to leave by facility management. If necessary, law enforcement may be contacted for assistance.
A: Illegal dumping will dealt with aggressively and violators will be prosecuted.
